On July 19, 2016, SSLM welcomed Dr. Peter Jermichov, who gave a guest lecture to our students. Titled "A Pilgrim's Reflections on Chanting in Unison and Part-Singing," the lecture combined insights from a recent trip that Dr. Jermichov took to the Vatopedi monastery on Mount Athos with a discussion of Johann von Gardner's seminal article on the psychology of unison and part-singing.  Dr. Jermichov illustrated his lecture with "live" examples, asking students to sing the same sacred melodies in their pure, unharmonized forms and comparing this with their harmonized versions.  The lecture was attended by the entire SSLM student body in the presence of faculty and well-wishers, and was very warmly received.  Dr. Jermichov's visit was sponsored by the Patriarch Tikhon Russian-American Music Institute (PaTRAM).
